Year 2

Welcome Badgers, Foxes and Squirrels!

Welcome to Year 2! We are thrilled to welcome your child to another exciting year of learning and discovery. We look forward to working closely with you throughout the year to support your child as they build confidence, develop new skills and reach their full potential.

As children continue their journey through Key Stage 1, we have high expectations for both their learning and behaviour. We encourage all children to follow our school behaviour code of Ready, Respectful, Safe. We regularly recognise and celebrate positive behaviour, effort and achievement, helping every child to feel proud of their progress.

Within English this term, we will enjoy studying the exciting ‘Katie in London’ by James Mayhew alongside ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’ by Julia Donaldson. These high-quality texts will inspire our reading and writing while helping children develop their vocabulary, comprehension, prosody and listening skills, building on the strong foundations established in Year 2. Children will also continue to take part in Read, Write, Inc lessons four times a week to further develop their reading and writing ability.

Within Mathematics, our children will develop a secure and deep understanding of mathematical concepts by making connections between different areas of learning. Children will be encouraged to work fluently between concepts and use mathematical reasoning to explore and solve problems. We want pupils to develop the confidence, knowledge and skills to apply what they have learnt to a range of problems, recognising the relationships and connections between different aspects of mathematics.

As part of our foundation subjects, our children will develop their understanding of the world around them through a range of exciting and engaging topics. In Geography, children will explore mapping skills and learn how to use maps to identify and locate different places. During October, we will celebrate Black History Month by learning about significant Black individuals and their contributions to history and society. Children will also explore London landmarks and discover the events of the Great Fire of London, developing their understanding of how London has changed over time.

To support your child’s learning at home, we ask that you:

  • Read with your child every day and talk about the stories you share.
  • Practise the sounds and words sent home as part of our phonics programme.
  • Encourage your child to talk about their day, experiences and interests.
  • Complete the weekly homework activities set on Class Dojo.
  • Complete the weekly spelling activities set on Class Dojo.

Thank you for your continued support. By working together, we can ensure your child has a happy, successful and memorable Year 2. We are excited for the year ahead and look forward to sharing many wonderful learning experiences and achievements with you.
